The FCEA Family and Students

The Agency.

Our mission drives the programs and services we offer to our clients.  Since 1997, we
have dedicated our resources to providing programming and services that address the
needs that our clients face:

Solutions for Educational Needs

COLLEGE PREPARATORY PROGRAM:  UPWARD BOUND
Upward Bound is one of five TRIO Programs designed to help students from low-income households (where neither parent graduated from a 4 year college) prepare for higher education.  Participants receive instruction and tutoring in literature, composition, mathematics, foreign language and science.  This instruction takes place after school, on Saturdays and during the summer.

FCEA has  Upward Bound Programs in two service areas:  South Suburban servicing School District 205 students (Thornton, Thornridge and Thornwood High School) and in the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago servicing  Harper High School and John Hope Academy High School students.

Programs That Provide Holistic Solutions

Comprehensive Sex Education:  This is accomplished by providing services to 100
students between the ages of 14-18 through the conduit of workshops, personal development
sessions, school retention and graduation strategies, college tours, and a family summit for
parents and students.

Financial Literacy - LIFE Start:  Students and parents receive instruction on the topics of
financial aid, student loans, debt management, budgeting and savings strategies and
scholarships.

Collaborative Solutions:  PASS - Positive Alternatives to School Suspension
In partnership with local elementary school districts,  students who are suspended are referred
to this program by principals and teachers within the district (as opposed to being sent home).
All participants receive academic assistance from literacy program teachers and counseling.
Participants are encouraged to improve classroom behavior and to avoid risky behaviors.
As a result of participating in the program, these students are counted as present in effect
avoiding the problems of poor absenteeism and high suspension rates.
